City of London Livery Companies: A Modern Guide

An accessible introduction to the City of London's livery tradition: what the companies are, what they do today, how Freedom and Livery relate, and how to research the company that best matches a profession or interest.

What is a livery company?

The livery companies developed from London's historic trade and craft guilds. Their modern roles extend well beyond their original trades, encompassing education, charity, professional standards, fellowship and civic life. The City of London describes more than 100 liveries and reports charitable activity worth over £75 million each year.

Historic institution, modern relevance

Modern companies represent traditional crafts and newer professions. Their links to education, research, professional development, armed-forces affiliations, charitable work and the civic institutions of the Square Mile make the livery movement a living network rather than simply a historical tradition.

Freedom and Livery

The Freedom of the City is distinct from membership of a livery company. The City of London states that members must become Freemen of the City before progressing within their companies as Liverymen. Routes and requirements vary, so applicants should always consult the relevant company and the Chamberlain's Court.

How to find the right company

  1. Start with profession or craft. Look for a direct modern or historical connection.
  2. Consider purpose. Education, charity, civic service, fellowship and professional networks differ by company.
  3. Check eligibility. Membership routes and requirements are company-specific.
  4. Use primary directories. Verify names, contacts and current status through City/Livery Committee sources.
  5. Attend and learn. Public lectures, open days and related events can provide useful context before approaching a company.

Why the livery still matters

Liverymen retain a civic role in the election of the Sheriffs and the Lord Mayor. The companies also support education, charity, trade and professional excellence. That combination of heritage and contemporary civic purpose is central to understanding the institution.

Current civic evidence

Evidence checked: 6 September 2026. City of London Corporation guidance says livery companies remain integral to City governance: Liverymen elect the Sheriffs, endorse the election of the Lord Mayor and participate in major civic events. Its Freedom guidance, updated 12 May 2026, also confirms that members of City livery companies must become Freemen of the City before progressing within their companies as Liverymen.

The Freedom is now open globally rather than being restricted to British or Commonwealth citizens. Routes include admission through a Livery Company, nomination, servitude, patrimony and the Ward List, subject to the City's current rules.
